Why Insiders Say Family Could Decide LeBron’s Retirement Timeline

As LeBron James enters his 23rd NBA season, the conversation around his retirement has grown louder. At 40 years old, the Lakers star has defied age and expectations, but insiders suggest his next move may depend less on championships and more on family.

LeBron recently exercised his $52.6 million player option for the 2025–26 season, ensuring he remains in Los Angeles for at least one more year. His production continues to silence doubters: 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game last season, numbers that still place him among the NBA’s elite.

But while the on-court dominance remains, James himself has admitted that family priorities will dictate his eventual decision to walk away.

The Bryce Factor

Much of the current speculation revolves around Bryce James, LeBron’s youngest son. Bryce is projected to be eligible for the 2026 NBA Draft, and whispers are growing louder that LeBron may extend his career just to overlap with his son’s rookie season.

An NBA executive told Lakers Daily: “I think LeBron plays one or two more seasons unless the Lakers win it all next year. Bryce will be eligible for the 2026 draft. There are some whispers that LeBron wants to play with him too.”

If true, James could delay retirement to create something unprecedented: a father-and-son duo, or even a father-and-sons trio with Bronny already in the league.

“Priority Number One Will Be My Wife”

On his Mind the Game podcast earlier this year, LeBron was clear about his priorities.

“Priority number one will be my wife. It would be my wife, my kids,” he said.

With four children and his longtime partner Savannah, family has always been central to James’ public identity. The possibility of sharing the floor with both Bronny and Bryce makes the decision even more personal and historic.

What’s at Stake

The Lakers’ performance could also play a role. Some insiders believe James could retire earlier if the team secures a championship, closing his career on the ultimate high note. But without that, the pull of family milestones may prove stronger than the lure of another title chase.

For now, LeBron remains focused on the present. But with Bryce’s eligibility on the horizon, the NBA could be looking at a storyline never seen before: a father extending his career to make history alongside two sons.
