From Michael Jordan to a New Direction
For years, Wahlberg stood firmly in the Michael Jordan camp. During a 2021 appearance on Undisputed with Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe, he didn’t hesitate when asked who the GOAT was.
“Michael has never lost in the Finals — he’s six for six,” Wahlberg said at the time. “He’s by far the greatest of all time.”
That was then. But four years later, the actor’s stance has changed and his latest answer has left fans both intrigued and divided.

In a recent rapid-fire Q&A with ESPN, Wahlberg was asked once again to name his NBA GOAT. This time, he didn’t hesitate, but he didn’t say Jordan, either.
“The NBA GOAT?” Wahlberg replied. “Bill Russell.”
It’s a choice that speaks to his Boston roots. Russell, who spent his entire career with the Celtics, won an astonishing 11 championships in 13 seasons, was a five-time MVP, and remains one of the most decorated players in NBA history.
