Caitlin Clark’s Comeback Delayed Again — What’s Really Going On?

The Indiana Fever are keeping quiet on when Caitlin Clark will make her long-awaited return to the lineup, leaving fans and analysts in the dark as the regular season winds down.

The 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year has now missed 22 games since injuring her right groin in a pre-All-Star break matchup against the Connecticut Sun. Despite weeks of rehab, head coach Stephanie White made clear that there’s still no timetable for Clark’s return.

“Until she can get into practice and until you guys see her in practice, it’s really status quo,” White told reporters.

Ankle bruise adds to complications

To make matters even more complicated, multiple reports confirmed that Clark suffered a bone bruise in her left ankle while rehabbing from her original injury. The Fever stressed that the setback would not alter her recovery timeline, but it raised fresh questions about when the star guard will be ready to play again.

Teammate Sophie Cunningham, who is sidelined for the rest of the season with a torn MCL, admitted on her Show Me Something podcast that Clark herself doesn’t know when she’ll return.

“She doesn’t even know. Literally, it’s a day-by-day legit type of thing,” Cunningham said. “At this level, with how deep and how good people are nowadays in our league… just trying to get her back in game shape is what they’re trying to do.”

A rare stretch of missed time

The long layoff is unusual for Clark, who built her reputation on durability. She never missed a game during her college career at Iowa and suited up for every Fever contest in her debut season. Her rookie year not only earned her Rookie of the Year honors, but also helped spark a surge of national attention for the franchise.

This season, Indiana has shown resilience without her, sitting sixth in the WNBA standings and capturing the Commissioner’s Cup title. Still, her absence looms large, and her eventual return could decide how far the Fever go in the postseason.

What’s next?

With the regular season nearing its close, Clark’s recovery remains one of the league’s biggest storylines. The Fever confirmed in late July that medical evaluations showed no additional structural damage, but the combination of groin and ankle injuries has delayed her progress.

Until Clark gets back on the practice floor, her comeback remains a mystery—and the Fever’s playoff hopes hang in the balance.
