LeBron James Staying Put: No Trade or Buyout Talks with Lakers, Per Sources

Despite weeks of speculation, LeBron James is still expected to suit up for the Los Angeles Lakers next season. And according to team and league sources, there have been no trade or buyout talks initiated by James or his representatives.

No Request, No Discussions — LeBron Staying Put for Now

Multiple reports confirmed this week that both the Lakers and people close to LeBron fully expect him to be with the team for training camp. While James’ agent Rich Paul sparked speculation last month with cryptic remarks about evaluating LeBron’s future, team insiders clarified:
“There has been no indication from James or his reps that he wants a trade or buyout.”

James exercised his $52.6 million player option in late June, making this his eighth straight season with the Lakers. It’s his longest stretch with any one team.

Luka’s Arrival Changes the Dynamic

For the first time in his career, LeBron is not the Lakers’ main focal point. That spot now belongs to Luka Dončić, acquired in a blockbuster deal last season. While that trade added fuel to trade rumors, the reality is more complicated:

  • James holds a full no-trade clause.
  • Teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers — a rumored destination — can’t match LeBron’s salary due to second-apron restrictions.
  • A buyout is also off the table. The Lakers have no incentive to cut James when they’re still trying to contend now while building for the future.

No Lakers Extension for LeBron — But No Exit Either

The Lakers reportedly didn’t offer LeBron a contract extension this offseason, instead viewing him as an expiring contract as they maintain flexibility for 2026 and beyond.

Still, LeBron has made public appearances with the team recently:

  • Shaking hands with Rob Pelinka.
  • Chatting with JJ Redick.
  • Posing for photos with new additions like Deandre Ayton and Jake LaRavia during Summer League.

What’s Next: Training Camp, Then Decision Time

Unless something changes before the season begins, LeBron James will start Year 23 wearing purple and gold. Whether he finishes the year in L.A., or reconsiders his future afterward, remains open.

For now, as ESPN’s Dave McMenamin put it:
Both sides expect LeBron to be with the Lakers. No trade. No buyout. No requests made.
