Boston may have lost Tatum for now, but they’re not backing down from big moves.
The Boston Celtics are wasting no time exploring splashy options after a summer shakeup that saw them part ways with Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis. Now, with Jayson Tatum sidelined due to a ruptured Achilles and expected to miss much of the 2025–26 season, Boston’s front office is reportedly turning its attention to a former rival turned opportunity: Damian Lillard.
According to The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach, the Celtics are among several teams showing early interest in the nine-time All-Star after he was unexpectedly waived by the Milwaukee Bucks earlier this week.
“The Celtics are among a group of teams that has shown early interest in signing the nine-time All-Star,” Himmelsbach reported. “A league source also made it clear that Lillard could have interest in Boston, too, citing his respect for the organization and his long friendship with Tatum.”
A Fresh Start for Lillard—And Boston?
Lillard, 34, is coming off a strong statistical season, averaging 24.9 points, 7.1 assists, and 4.7 rebounds, before suffering a ruptured Achilles in the playoffs. Though his return timeline is unclear, his value as a future contributor and veteran leader remains very real.
Adding to the intrigue: Lillard and Tatum’s long-standing friendship, which could make Boston a mutually appealing destination. The Celtics, under new ownership and aiming to stay below the second tax apron, are actively resetting their roster to compete long-term. And the Dame-Tatum connection could be the foundation of that plan.
Championship Window Still Open?
Boston’s 2024 title run proved their elite potential, but the franchise isn’t clinging to the past. Moving on from Porzingis and Holiday signaled a willingness to evolve. And bringing in a big name like Lillard, even while injured, would affirm that the Celtics are still hunting for banners.
Lillard, meanwhile, would get a shot at another run with a legitimate contender. This time alongside someone he calls a close friend. If healthy by late season or the playoffs, the addition of Dame could reshape Boston’s trajectory in dramatic fashion.
